Hi8 Video Projects

My love for Hi8 video lies in the physical immediacy of the medium, the ease of starting and stopping recording. In contrast to modern smartphone video culture, which favors spectacle and quick moments, Hi8 allows space for the mundane and transitional moments of everyday life.

Using a Sony Handycam, I document both extraordinary and ordinary experiences, valuing their quiet in-between states. I have been compiling footage into short form documentaries, often in tandem with The Sunshine Recorder publication project. I have produced one short film on Hi8 titled ‘¡Esos son Mis Maduros, Gilipolla!’ which premiered at the University at Buffalo’s Department of Media Study event World Making at the World’s End in February 2025. This section includes stills and behind-the-scenes material from that production, as well as other ongoing Hi8 projects.
